Mother-of-five, 34, killed in hit-and-run in Wigan

Written by on 22/04/2019

A mother-of-five has been killed and several others injured in a hit-and-run in Wigan.

Five people have been taken to hospital for treatment, including a 13-year-old girl whose injuries are described by police as serious.

Police were called to Bickershaw Lane on Saturday evening after reports of a collision involving three cars – a Polo, an Amarok and a Mercedes.

Officers found the Amarok had driven away.

The vehicle was later found abandoned on an adjacent street.

The woman driving the Polo was taken to hospital, but later died from her injuries.

Two people travelling in the Mercedes have been charged with causing death by dangerous driving, both having been treated in hospital.

Sergeant Joseph Barron described the crash as a “senseless incident”.

“Children have been left without a mother, all because they were in the wrong place at the wrong time,” he said.

Turning his focus to the occupants of the Amarok, he added: “They know very well they have questions to answer about their behaviour.

“They left the scene without thought for the people in the cars around them, they owe it to the victim’s family now to come forward and talk to police.”

Police have not publicly named the woman who died in the crash, but condolence messages from family and friends have since flooded Facebook.

The 34-year-old has been described as “a good friend” and “one in a million”, with others sending best wishes to her husband and five children.
