Cumbrian coastline plays host to new summer hospice fundraising event

Written by on 06/05/2023

Cumbria’s beautiful coastline will play host to a new event aimed at raising vital funds for Jigsaw, Cumbria’s Children’s Hospice.

Wildlife lovers and people looking for a fun day out are being called upon to take part in a walk over the Leven estuary to Chapel Island, off Cumbria’s south coast, on Sunday, June 25.

From a safe distance, walkers will be able to see the stunning nesting wildlife that call the island home, so participants are being urged to remember to take along a pair of binoculars to catch an even better glimpse of what’s on offer.

The popular walk over the sands is arranged by the Guide of Sands Trust, who run award-winning bay walks, and being led by the appointed guide of the Leven’s estuary.

The Chapel Island Walk replaces a long-running event in the fundraising calendar organised by the hospice walking across Morecambe Bay.

Vicki Lesley, from the hospice’s fundraising team, said: “The Chapel Island Walk promises to be a great day out with some unforgettable views and experiences. Not only will be it a wonderful day to enjoy with family, friends and work colleagues, by taking part you’ll be helping the hospice to continue providing care to people when they need it most.”

The charity provides care and support to children with life-limiting illnesses from all corners of Cumbria. The hospice needs to raise £2,126.46 to pay for all its care services for one whole day.

Setting off walking along the headland of Sandgate, Flookburgh, once on the sand participants will walk roughly 1.5 to two miles to Chapel Island, observing the wildlife, taking a short lunch break near the island before the return walk to Sandgate.

The registration fee is £17.50 for adults, £15 for young 16–17-year-olds and children 15 and under £5. The charity asks that there is a minimum sponsorship pledge of £32.50 per participant.
