Council invests £700,000 in major road resurfacing works on A65

Cumbria County Council will be carrying out essential road maintenance work on the A65 from Crooklands roundabout to Cow Brow at Lupton starting next week.
The county council is investing approx. £700,000 in the works which will involve replacing worn-out sections of road with a brand new, hard-wearing surface on a 1.7km length of carriageway.
This scheme will provide a significant improvement to the road network and make journeys safer and smoother for road users.
Resurfacing works are scheduled to start on Monday 15 March and are expected to last for approximately three weeks subject to favourable weather conditions.
The county council recognises the A65 is an important strategic route in the county normally carrying a high volume of traffic.
The works will be taking place during Lockdown when there is less traffic on the roads. To further minimise disruption, the works will be carried out overnight only.
To protect the public and the council’s contractor, Aggregate Industries, and to ensure the works can be safely carried out, it will be necessary to close the road to all traffic between 7pm and 5am each night throughout this period. Access will however be maintained for emergency vehicles. The road will re-open to traffic during the day.
A signed diversion route will operate for HGVs and motorway permitted traffic via M6- Junction 36 to Junction 37, A684 Sedbergh, A683 Kirkby Lonsdale, A65. A secondary diversion for motorway prohibited traffic will be signed via Kirkby Lonsdale, B6254 Oxenholme, A65 Endmoor.
Cllr Keith Little, Cumbria County Council Cabinet member for Highways and Transport, said: “This essential road maintenance work will replace worn-out sections of road with a new, hard-wearing surface, making journeys smoother and safer for drivers. The council has been carrying out drainage repairs on the A65 in advance of the resurfacing scheme.
“This section of the A65 is fairly narrow and as a result will need to be closed so our contractor can safely carry out resurfacing. To keep disruption to a minimum, the works will take place at night, outside normal working hours, when the road is less busy. We thank the local community for their patience and understanding during this period. Drivers are advised to plan ahead and allow extra time for journeys.”
