Charity gears up for local radio fundraiser

Written by on 30/03/2019

Volunteers at a local charity, which has just been shortlisted for the Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service, are getting ready for a weekend which celebrates and highlights all things local at their radio station.

Bay Trust Radio, which is based in Kendal, is hosting a fundraising broadcast over Easter weekend which celebrates their 42nd year of broadcasting on air. The station is the only radio service to broadcast 24 hours a day from Kendal and is run entirely by volunteers from across the region.

The station started life as Kendal Hospital Radio and was based in the Westmorland County Hospital in 1977. Since then, volunteers have worked hard to provide a 24 hour service to local hospitals across South Cumbria and North Lancashire and to the wider community online.

As well their headquarters in Kendal, a new studio has recently opened in Blackpool to allow more people to get involved with the charity. The new studio will operate alongside the Kendal HQ and technology which allows presenters to create their shows from their own homes.

John Williamson, Station President, said:

“We are really excited to celebrate another year of our charity bringing programmes to local people on the radio. This year, we want to celebrate the station’s birthday with live music performances and shine a spotlight on local people, organisations and good causes.”

“The station continues to go from strength to strength, and we’re pleased that more local people are discovering us and listening through their phones, tablets and smart speakers. Volunteer numbers are continuing to grow which means we are starting to bring even more programmes to our audience.

If you know a great local charity, organisation or music group who would like to feature on Bay Trust Radio’s Easter Weekend broadcast, please get in touch.
