WWII veteran’s death: CCTV footage released of attempted burglary as police search for suspects

Written by on 19/03/2019

CCTV footage has been released by police investigating a violent robbery that led to the death of a 98-year-old man, as a fresh appeal is launched to find his attackers.

Second World War veteran Peter Gouldstone was assaulted in the home in Enfield, north London, he had lived in for more than 60 years.

He suffered severe injuries including two bleeds to the brain and extensive bruising to his body during the break-in and died in hospital a few weeks later.

Detectives investigating the case have now released a CCTV clip of three men trying to break in to another house near Mr Gouldstone’s home on the same evening, 5 November.

Detective Inspector Alison Cole said: “We believe there were at least three men involved in this attempted burglary and we are very keen to speak to them.

“We are appealing for anyone who thinks they may know these individuals to get in touch with any information, no matter how small.

“Mr Gouldstone tragically died following a senseless attack in his own home and we are doing all we can to help his family get the justice they deserve.”

A £10,000 reward is on offer for information leading to the arrest and prosecution of the men who broke into the war veteran’s home.

Police previously said that a number of Mr Gouldstone’s possessions had been stolen in the burglary, including a 26-inch Panasonic TV.

Mr Gouldstone had retired from his work at the Post Office in 1980 and his wife of 65 years, Joan, died in 2013.

While Mr Gouldstone was in hospital, his son Simon had also appealed for help to find those who attacked his father.

Anyone with information can call police on 101 quoting reference 2140/6NOV or the incident room on 020 8345 3715, or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111 or online to remain anonymous.
