WWE Battleground predictions

Written by on 23/07/2017

Trying to pick a winner in the unpredictable world of sports entertainment is never easy but our WWE Editor Anton Toloui attempts to asses each match ahead of Battleground, live on Sky Sports Box Office at 1am.

WWE Champion Jinder Mahal v Randy Orton (Punjabi Prison match)

A Punjabi Prison match hasn’t been staged in WWE for about a decade and the previous two encounters weren’t exactly classics.

Despite that, Jinder Mahal will defend his title against veteran Randy Orton in the ‘steel enforced bamboo’ structure.

It’s fair to say the feud hasn’t caught the fans’ imagination as much as WWE had hoped so an epic clash is needed to boost whoever walks away with the belt.

Prediction: Mahal retains.

John Cena v Rusev (Flag match)

In what seems like a flashback to 80s ‘my country is better than yours’ wrestling, the winner of this match is whoever captures the opponent’s flag.

John Cena has always been an American hero during his time in WWE, with Rusev pitched as the Bulgarian bad boy.

Dated patriotism aside, this is Cena’s first match since Wrestlemania and he’ll want a good showing to prove he deserves a big name opponent at next month’s SummerSlam.

Prediction: Cena wins.

AJ Styles (U.S. Champion) v Kevin Owens

A lot of fans would prefer it if this was for the WWE Championship given the in-ring prowess and natural charisma of the competitors.

Nevertheless, Styles v Owens could be the clash of the night, live on Sky Sports Box Office from 1am.

Their rivalry has been a little stop-start, especially if Battleground is the final chapter, but at least it should be a joy to watch between the ropes.

Prediction: Styles retains.

Tamina v Natalya v Charlotte Flair v Lana v Becky Lynch (Five-way elimination match)

This is the most difficult match of the night to predict given number of people in the ring.

The winner of what promises to be a chaotic match takes on Naomi for the Smackdown Women’s Championship at SummerSlam.

Lynch has the momentum after picking up a huge win over Flair on Smackdown but it rarely goes with form in WWE.

Prediction: Flair sets up an epic at SummerSlam.

Others:

Baron Corbin v Shinsuke Nakamura: Nakamura wins but Corbin goes too far

The Usos (Smackdown Tag Team Champions) v The New Day: The New Day takes home the gold

Sami Zayn v Mike Kanellis : Kanellis wins thanks to a genius plan from wife Maria

Aiden English v Tye Dillinger (Kickoff match): Dillinger wins.
