World Cup 2018: With Gareth Southgate at helm, England start to believe

Written by on 08/07/2018

All the love was for one man as the first goal went in.

As fists pumped in the air, fans in the Skylight Rooftop bar in east London roared: “Hands up if you love Southgate! Hands up if you love Southgate!”

Harry Maguire had scored – and with the ball hitting the back of the net, England’s dream of making a World Cup semi-final for the first time in 28 years moved one step closer.

As the sun blazed down, the crowd became more and more vocal.

With a second goal courtesy of Dele Alli, any doubt disappeared.

Lewis Besley, 23, said: “It’s coming home! I’ve waited so, so long for it to finally come home.

“It’s so much about Southgate. He has shown such leadership. Everyone is starting to believe.”

His friend Jojo Thompson is already booking days off work in anticipation.

“I’ve been disappointed by England for the entirety of my 23 years and now there’s the possibility we might actually win it!”

Daring to believe can be dangerous. All England fans know that.

But with another victory in the bag, it’s hard to blame them.
