Woman, 84, forced to eat out of her bin after becoming trapped is rescued by police

Written by on 08/04/2020

An elderly woman forced to eat out of her rubbish bin has been rescued by police after she became trapped in her home and her food delivery was stolen.

Elizabeth, 84, from Feltham, west London, accidentally locked herself in her home.

The pensioner, who has no friends or family nearby, found herself trapped in her property with no way of leaving.

The woman had managed to secure a delivery of food online but was unable to open her door to retrieve her emergency supply of food.

While trapped inside, police say “a callous individual took advantage of the situation and stole the food from the pensioner’s front door step, leaving her with nothing”.

Metropolitan Police officers Matt Hodge and Pat Peltier were notified of Elizabeth’s situation and managed to get into the home.

The pair found her fridge was empty, with Elizabeth telling them she had been forced to eat out of her rubbish bin in order to survive.

The officers bought her food, drinks and toiletries from nearby shops to ensure her wellbeing, before putting steps in place to ensure the problems experienced by the pensioner do not happen again.

A spokesperson for the Met Police, who shared the story on the force’s Facebook page, said the woman had been “overwhelmed with the officer’s selflessness and generosity and thanked them for their help”.

They added: “This is a remarkable example of what lengths our officers will go to, to protect local residents during this very challenging time.

“Well done PC’s Matt Hodge and Pat Peltier!”
