‘We played for the people who died’: Man Utd win Europa League final

Written by on 25/05/2017

Manchester United have beaten Ajax 2-0 in an emotional Europa League final in Stockholm.

The win means they qualify for the Champions League.

Before the match, players had held a two minute silence in honour of the Manchester attack victims.

Afterwards, goal-scorer Paul Pogba said: "We played for the people who died."

Both teams wore black armbands as a mark of respect.

Security was tight ahead of the match in Sweden, with fans facing two rings of checks to get into the Friends Arena in Stockholm.

Supporters had to show their tickets at the first checkpoint to gain access to the concourse surrounding the stadium and then faced pat-downs and bag searches at a second checkpoint.

Both teams also observed a minute’s silence during training sessions on Tuesday.

Earlier today, Chelsea cancelled their Premier League title parade.

"Given the heightened security threat announced by the Government, and recognising that this is a developing situation, we have given this careful consideration," the club said.

"We are sure our fans will understand this decision."

Twenty-two people were killed, many of them children, and 64 wounded in the attack on Monday night at Manchester Arena, where US star Ariana Grande had just held a concert.
