After worrisome starts to the season, both teams have flourished in recent months, vaulting themselves into the Western Conference playoff picture.
The Spurs (32-25) have won seven of their last 10 games and sit sixth in the West. The unique mix of a starting five built around the mid-range games of LaMarcus Aldridge and DeMar DeRozan with a sharpshooting bench of three-point gunners has gelled over the past two months.
Aldridge was recently named an All-Star for the seventh time in his long career. The Spurs are the NBA’s most-efficient three-point shooting team (40.7 per cent) despite taking the league’s third-fewest treys.
Their 21-year streak of reaching the postseason, which in the early weeks of the season looked in jeopardy, now looks assured.
Like the Spurs, the Jazz (31-24) endured a rocky start to the campaign. Their rugged defense, a hallmark of their play, fell victim to new league rules limiting physical contact, something that left Defensive Player of the Year Rudy Gobert incredibly frustrated.
A lop-sided schedule that meant they played substantially more games on the road than at home didn’t help either.
Home comforts – they are now 17-10 at the Vivid Smart Home Center – have definitely helped then rise above .500 and into the West playoff spots. Shooting guard Donovan Mitchell has found his scoring touch in recent weeks, helping Utah to seven wins in their last 10 games.
