Southgate Tube to be renamed after England manager

Southgate underground station is to be renamed after England’s World Cup manager.

The Piccadilly line station in Enfield, north London, will be rebranded Gareth Southgate for 48 hours from Monday, Transport for London has revealed.

Southgate guided the England team to their most successful World Cup since they reached the semi-final in Italy in 1990.

The team’s journey to fourth place in Russia was followed passionately by many across the country, with chants of “its coming home” echoing a feeling of renewed World Cup optimism.

Southgate became a national hero: many Brits wore his signature waistcoat in his honour and some even took it upon themselves to rename Southgate station after the manager by writing “Gareth” above the station’s Tube sign.

“The great performance of the England team this summer brought people of all ages together in celebration,” Mark Wild, TfL’s London Underground managing director, said.

“We’re delighted to be able to show our appreciation to Gareth and the team by renaming the station in his honour.

“This is another great example of how we, and brands, can work creatively together.”
