Jeremy Corbyn: Man charged with assault after Labour leader egged outside mosque

Written by on 04/03/2019

A man has been charged with assault after Labour leader Jeremy Corbyn was egged during a trip to a mosque.

John Murphy, 31, from Barnet, north London, was charged in the early hours of Monday morning, the Metropolitan Police said.

Mr Corbyn was unhurt in the incident as he visited Finsbury Park Mosque in north London on Sunday, when the egg was pressed down on his head rather than thrown.

The politician continued with his planned constituency events that day at the mosque and Muslim Welfare House.

He was taking part in the fifth annual Visit My Mosque day, in which Muslim places of worship across the UK open their doors to the public.

Mr Corbyn later tweeted: “Every year Muslim communities across the country open their doors to people of all faiths and none on #VisitMyMosque Day.

“It’s a fantastic opportunity to build understanding across communities and educate ourselves about our diverse communities. Let’s build bridges not walls.”

Murphy will appear at Highbury Corner Magistrates’ Court on Tuesday, 19 March.
