UK weather warning issued as heavy rain and storms set to batter parts of the country

Written by on 23/09/2019

A weather warning has been issued for parts of the UK as heavy downpours and thunderstorms are set to batter the country.

The showers are thought to be “loosely” associated with Hurricane Humberto, which edged past Bermuda and is now making its way across the Atlantic.

At its peak, Humberto was a category three storm, with gusts of up to 129mph (207kmph).

The Met Office yellow weather warning stretches from London and the South East, towards southern parts of Wales and Herefordshire, as well as the South West of England.

It is thought that the stormy conditions will last until Tuesday afternoon.

Met Office meteorologist Luke Miall said: “We could see 20mm to 40mm of rain within nine hours and possibly the worst case scenario is of 70mm in some spots.”

He added there could be thunder too in some areas, in stark contrast to the dry and sunny weekend.

Commuters are being warned journeys could be disrupted on Tuesday morning with flooding set to hit bus and train services.

Homes and businesses could also end up being affected by the downpours.
