UK weather: Almost a month’s worth of rain set to fall on Friday, forecasters warn

Written by on 16/08/2019

Some parts of the UK can expect nearly a month’s rain on Friday, causing difficult driving conditions and potential flooding.

Forecasters are issuing a yellow warning for between 8am and 10pm in Wales, northwest England and southwest England.

Areas of high ground are expected to see the worst weather.

Commuters may be impacted by heavy rain in the afternoon and early evening, which could cause difficult driving conditions on major routes.

In some areas, up to 80mm of rain is possible – nearly reaching the average August rainfall – which is 107mm for Wales and 90mm in the South West.

Met Office forecaster Marco Petagna said August can “actually be a fairly wet month”.

This follows severe flooding at the end of last month which impacted parts of central, northwest and northeast England.

At least 11 people had to be rescued from flood waters in the town of Poynton in Cheshire, while many homes were flooded and people were left stranded in their cars in Yorkshire.

A bridge collapsed in Grinton, North Yorkshire, and the emergency services were inundated with calls.

Most of the UK will see rain at some point on Friday.

Strong winds are also expected, with 30mph to 40mph gusts likely in exposed areas.

Mr Petagna said the weekend is likely to bring sunshine and blustery showers, and added that the weather will improve next week.

“Especially come midweek, pressure’s building a bit,” he said.
