Two die in ‘extremely fierce’ care home fire in Cheshunt

Written by on 09/04/2017

Two people have died after an early morning fire at a care home in Cheshunt, Hertfordshire.

Thirty-three people were rescued and three were taken to hospital suffering from smoke inhalation and minor burns, said East of England Ambulance Service.

Firefighters said the "whole roof" had been "well alight" when they arrived.

An ambulance service spokesman said five crews, two ambulance officers, a Hazardous Area Response Team (HART) and a volunteer doctor had been dispatched.

Fire crews were called to the Newgrange care home in Cadmore Lane at 5.51am, said Hertfordshire County Council.

"Firefighters were faced with an extremely fierce fire, well-established in the first floor and the roof of the building, which has since collapsed, said a statement.

"Thirty-three residents were rescued and firefighters worked closely with police and ambulance colleagues to evacuate them to a nearby emergency reception centre.

"Sadly, we can confirm that two people died in the fire and we would like to offer our sympathies to their families.

"Hertfordshire County Council is working in close cooperation with Broxbourne Council and the health service to assess the needs of the evacuated residents and arrange alternative accommodation."
