TV’s biggest shock moments revealed ahead of BAFTA nominations

Written by on 03/06/2020

Arya killing the Night King, Nessa’s proposal to Smithy and a shock Love Island dumping have been among the biggest TV talking points of the past 12 months – and now they are in the running for a BAFTA too.

The stand-out scenes from Game Of Thrones, Gavin & Stacey and the reality TV dating show are among the six nominees for the Virgin Media Must-See Moment Award, which is voted for by the public, at this year’s television BAFTAs.

Also in the running are the death of Sinead Osbourne from cervical cancer in Coronation Street, the Hot Priest’s confessional scene in Fleabag and the shock murder of Stephen Graham’s undercover policeman John Corbett in Line Of Duty.

Members of the public can vote for their favourite TV moment of the year here.

You can also let us know which ones are your favourite in our poll.

The full list of BAFTA TV nominees is due to be announced on Thursday, with other hit shows including Chernobyl and Killing Eve also expected to feature on the shortlist after success at the Emmys in 2019 and the Golden Globes earlier this year.

Hannah Wyatt, chair of BAFTA’s television committee, said: “Television in 2019 showcased the incredible craft, gripping scriptwriting and brilliant visuals which continue to captivate the British public.

“From bringing back nostalgic favourites, to raising awareness about hugely important issues, the shows and moments nominated for Virgin Media’s Must-See Moment Award 2020 reflect BAFTA’s values to champion excellence and inspire creativity.”

The winner will be announced on 31 July in a virtual ceremony which is being hosted by Richard Ayoade.
