TV BAFTAs: The Crown and Line Of Duty lead nominations

British dramas The Crown, Line Of Duty and Black Mirror lead the nominations for this year’s TV BAFTAs.

Netflix’s Royal drama scored three nominations, including best leading actress for Claire Foy, best supporting actress for Vanessa Kirby and best drama – down from five nods last year.

BBC One’s police drama Line Of Duty also scored three nominations, including best actress for Thandie Newton, best supporting actor for Adrian Dunbar and best drama.

The show’s cliffhanger when Newton wakes up just before being cut up with a chainsaw was among the best must-see moments nominated by the public.

It will go up against Stormzy’s Love Island cameo, the unveiling of Jodie Whittaker as Dr Who, a whale grieving for her baby in Blue Planet II, Ariana Grande’s performance at the One Love Manchester concert, and Viserion the dragon being killed in Game Of Thrones.

Another show with three nominations is Charlie Brooker’s tech-horror anthology Black Mirror.

Its episode Hang The DJ was nominated in the single drama category and the best actor category for Joe Cole, while Jimmi Simpson received a best supporting actor nod for episode USS Callister.

Following closely with two nods is Channel 4’s comedy Catastrophe, nominated for best scripted comedy and best female performance in a comedy for Sharon Horgan.

On the international front, Sky Atlantic’s Big Little Lies is set against FX’s Feud: The Betty And Joan Story, Hulu’s The Handmaid’s Tale and the BBC documentary The Vietnam War.

The race for best entertainment show is mostly dominated by ITV, with Ant And Dec’s Saturday Night Takeaway, Britain’s Got Talent and The Voice going against the BBC’s Michael McIntyre’s Big Show.

This year will be the first to feature a short-form programme category, with Sky Arts’ Morgana Robinson’s Summer nominated against the likes of BBC’s Eating With My Ex.

The nominations for this year’s sport category are Sky’s Anthony Joshua v Wladimir Klitschko, the BBC’s Six Nations: Wales v England, ITV’s The Grand National and Channel 4’s UEFA Women’s Euro Semi-Final: England v Netherlands.

As for news coverage, Sky News’ special programmes on The Battle for Mosul and The Rohingya Crisis are set against ITV and Channel 4’s Grenfell Tower specials.

The BAFTA TV awards will be presented on 13 May by former Great British Bake Off host Sue Perkins.
