Donald Trump has thanked Kanye West after the rapper talked about his support for the president during an interview on a US talk show.

During an appearance on Jimmy Kimmel Live! West discussed his support for Mr Trump and questioned why people criticise the president instead of trying “love”.

Tweeting from his New Jersey golf course on Friday night, the president said: “Thank you to Kanye West and the fact that he is willing to tell the TRUTH. It is making a big difference.”

West defended his decision to support Mr Trump during the 2016 presidential election, telling Kimmel: “… it took me a year and a half to have the confidence to stand up and put on the hat no matter what the consequences were.

“And what it represented to me is not about policies – because I’m not a politician like that, but it represented overcoming fear and doing what you felt, no matter what anyone said, in saying, you can’t bully me: liberals can’t bully me, news can’t bully me, the hip-hop community, they can’t bully me.”

He added: “I quite enjoy it when people are mad at me about certain things.”

But West’s appearance was not all positive for the president.

The 41-year-old superstar was notably silent on the show when he was asked whether he thinks Mr Trump cares about black people.

Kimmel pointed to the policy that separated families caught crossing the border illegally and asked: “You’ve so famously and so powerfully said ‘George Bush doesn’t care about black people’… it makes me wonder what makes you think that Donald Trump does, or any people at all?”

West considered the question, sitting silently without answering before the programme cut to a commercial break.

Kimmel had earlier asked West if he was worried about his wife, Kim Kardashian West, being alone with the president in the Oval Office during a recent visit.

The rapper replied that Trump “is a player”, drawing laughs.
