Top Gun Maverick trailer: Five things we have learned about new fighter pilot movie

Written by on 17/12/2019

The new trailer for the Top Gun sequel has been released with Tom Cruise reprising his role as US fighter pilot Pete “Maverick” Mitchell more than 30 years after the original hit movie.

The Hollywood film is not out until next summer, so what do we find out from the two minutes of footage which makes up the second trailer this year?

:: Maverick is now an instructor

In the 1986 film, Cruise’s character was sent to a training school to sharpen his skills after defying orders.

In the 2020 follow-up, he is training a new generation of fighter pilots.

An unidentified voice in the trailer says of Maverick: “Your instructor is one of the finest pilots this programme has ever produced.

“His exploits are legendary. What he has to teach you may very well mean the difference between life and death.”

:: Cruise is back in the cockpit

We see the lead character introduce himself in the air to the graduates.

He says: “Good morning aviators, this is your captain speaking. Today’s exercise is dogfighting.”

:: More spectacular aerial scenes

Don’t worry Top Gun fans, the sequel has lots more of those thrilling aerial combat scenes that made the 80s flick famous.

:: A nod to the past

In the new film, Maverick trains the graduates for a specialist mission “the likes of which no living pilot has ever seen”.

He encounters Lieutenant Bradley Bradshaw, played by Whiplash star Miles Teller.

Bradshaw has the call sign Rooster and is the son of Maverick’s late friend and radar intercept officer Lieutenant Nick Bradshaw, aka Goose.

A synopsis with the trailer says: “Facing an uncertain future and confronting the ghosts of his past, Maverick is drawn into a confrontation with his own deepest fears, culminating in a mission that demands the ultimate sacrifice from those who will be chosen to fly it.”

:: Motorbikes, beaches, and bust-ups

Cruise is back on his motorcycle – again without a crash helmet. No health and safety precautions here.

Wearing his trademark leather jacket and aviator sunglasses, he has Jennifer Connelly holding on, rather than Kelly McGillis from last time.

There also looks like American football is played on the beach, where as last time it was famously volleyball.

And there is at least one bust-up in a training room.

Top Gun: Maverick is due out in cinemas on 26 June 2020
