The Hollywood star tweeted a picture from the original film showing his character Maverick at an airfield, holding a helmet bearing his name.

The image also references the 1986 film’s popular catchphrase “feel the need”.

The 55-year-old star simply wrote “#Day1” in the caption.

Cruise also tagged producer Jerry Bruckheimer and Skydance Media, who are tipped to be behind the sequel.

In 2017 he told Australian television programme Sunrise that the sequel was “definitely happening”, and that filming would begin this year.

The first film was directed by the late Tony Scott, who died in 2012.

According to entertainment website Variety, the film is called Top Gun: Maverick and will be set in a world of drone technology.

It is thought to have a July 2019 release date.

Cruise’s next film Mission Impossible: Fallout will be released on 26 July.
