Three arrested as part of operation to tackle boat thefts in South Lakes

Written by on 19/12/2023

Officers from the South Lakes Neighbourhood Policing Team (NPT), Rural Crime Team and Kendal CID conducted early morning arrests and address searches in West and South Yorkshire on Monday morning (18 December).

This action came as part of Operation Headway, Cumbria Police’s new, dedicated operation to tackle the theft of boats and related equipment.

A man, aged 27, from Wakefield, a woman aged 31, from Barnsley and a man aged 32 from Barnsley were all arrested on suspicion of theft and interviewed by detectives from Kendal CID.

The suspects have since been released on police bail whilst the investigation progresses.

During the property searches officers located several thousands of pounds of cash secreted in one of the properties. This was seized by police and a confiscation order is being sought using the Proceeds of Crime Act.

Inspector Ross Woods, South Lakes NPT, said “Operation Headway is a new initiative to help us address the issue of boat and outboard engine thefts in the Lake District area.

“This is not only about investigating offences that have occurred, but also demonstrating our commitment to work with local partners to pro-actively combat this type of crime and bring offenders to justice.

“Our detectives are continuing their investigation into several offences and would welcome any information from the public which may assist us”.

Speaking generally on the issue of those travelling into Cumbria to commit crime, Inspector Woods continued: “Yesterday’s arrests should serve as a strong message to travelling criminals, we will find you and we will hold you to account no matter how far away you live.”
