Tesco apologises for ‘Dark Panther’ fancy dress gaffe

Tesco has apologised after fans of Marvel blockbuster Black Panther questioned why a fancy dress outfit based on the character had been listed on its website as “Dark Panther”.

Despite the film making more than $704m (£504.1m) in just two weeks, the supermarket seemed unfamiliar with the superhero’s name.
The outfit – inspired by the protagonist, played by Chadwick Boseman – was listed as “Marvel Avengers Dark Panther Fancy Dress Costume”, which left plenty of fans unimpressed.
Tesco has removed the product from its website while it corrects the listing.
“This was a mistake and we are extremely sorry for any offence caused,” a spokesman told Sky News.
“We are correcting the description of this product on our website and are reviewing our processes to ensure this doesn’t happen again.”
Black Panther has been lauded as “groundbreaking” for being the first Marvel film to feature a predominantly black cast.
It has an approval rating of 97% on reviews aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes, with many of its characters due to return in the next Marvel installment – Avengers: Infinity War – in April.
