Suspect package in Limerick ‘identical’ to those found in UK

Written by on 22/03/2019

Irish police say a parcel found in a sorting office in Limerick “appears to be identical” to the parcel bombs sent to UK transport hubs earlier in the month.

According to the Garda, a suspicious parcel at the Limerick An Post Office was identified at around 6am.

The building was evacuated and bomb disposal experts were notified.

In a statement, the Garda said: “This parcel appears to be identical to parcels (pending closer forensic and ballistic examination) discovered earlier this month in London and Glasgow.”

“The army EOD team are currently at the scene.

“An Garda Siochana continue to liaise with the UK authorities in relation to these investigations.”

Speaking to Irish broadcaster RTE, Ireland’s justice minister Charlie Flanagan said: “This is a despicable act.

“The sending of incendiary devices like this is totally unacceptable. I hope the people responsible are brought to justice.”

A group claiming to be the IRA claimed they had sent five devices to addresses around the UK, but at the time of their claim, only four had been discovered.

Mr Flanagan believes this device could be the fifth one.

Devices were found on 6 March at a university in Glasgow, as well as at Heathrow and London City airports, and Waterloo train station on 5 March, all bearing an Irish post stamp.
