Sunday at the Grand Slam of Darts

Michael van Gerwen against Rob Cross, Peter Wright against Corey Cadby and Phil Taylor’s meeting with Robbie Green headline Sunday at the Grand Slam.

The nature of the tournament is that the winners of the first two group matches will face off on Sunday, as will the losers, giving some players a chance to seal a spot in the last 16 or leave some facing elimination.

Saturday’s dramatic opening day means Wright, James Wade, Simon Whitlock and Danny Noppert will need to chalk up victories to keep alive their hopes of progressing in the tournament.

As well as losers from the opening day, Phil Taylor, defending champion Van Gerwen and former champion Raymond van Barneveld know a win could leave them all but secure of a place in the knockout phase later this week.

Snakebite’s clash with Aussie sensation Cadby looks like the pick of the afternoon session, with both men fancied to do damage in the competition although they both suffered defeat on Saturday – Wright losing out to BDO world champion Durrant and Cadby to Norris.

Durrant’s display captured Saturday’s headlines and another strong showing against ‘Chuck’ will underline his status as the BDO’s best hope of a second winner of the tournament after Scott Waites in 2010.

All eyes will also be on Berry van Peer after the Dutchman suffered a battle with dartitis on the stage but still managed to beat Whitlock – Van Peer will face Gary Anderson, while Whitlock faces a tough test when he takes on Cameron Menzies.

In the evening, Van Gerwen and Cross will go head to head for the third tournament in succession, after both men chalked up 5-1 wins on Sunday night. MVG has beaten Cross at both the European Championship and World Series of Darts, but in his debut year Cross is growing increasingly comfortable on the big stage.

Barney against Gerwyn Price also looks like a cracker after both came through their Group B openers in fine style, while The Power’s quest for Grand Slam number six will see him line up against Robbie Green.

Green’s victory over James Wade means The Machine faces a potentially make-or-break match against Australia’s Peter Machin.
