Suffolk Police evacuate 60 homes after unidentified chemicals and grenades found

Written by on 29/07/2019

Dozens of homes in a coastal town have been evacuated after unidentified chemicals and two military grenades were found during a police raid.

Officers had a pre-planned warrant to search a property in Normanhurst Close in Lowestoft, Suffolk, on Sunday, and made the discoveries inside shortly before 1pm.

At least 60 homes were evacuated as a result, with a 100 metre cordon also imposed while explosive disposal experts from the army examine the items.

The officers are being assisted at the scene by local fire and rescue teams and the residential road remains closed to motorists and pedestrians.

North Lowestoft fire station tweeted: “Although our fire station is in the cordoned off area due to the ongoing police operation, we will still be responding to incidents.”

Police have arrested a man in his 50s at the scene on suspicion of possession of a firearm, and enquiries into the circumstances surrounding the incident are ongoing.
