Back To The Future, ET, NeverEnding Story, Alien, The Goonies – Stranger Things is all about paying homage to the 1980s.

But as the main stars of the hit show were born two decades later, it means they have got to do their homework.

Noah Schnapp, who plays Will Byers, has told Sky News he doesn’t always get some of the nostalgic references.

Speaking on the red carpet at the E! People’s Choice Awards, the 15-year-old said: “Not always. But, I feel like I grew up in the 80s now from Stranger Things.

“But my parents always go, ‘oh my God, I wore that shirt’, or ‘I did this’. So my parents relate to it.”

The sci-fi show, which stars British actress Millie Bobby Brown as Eleven, a child with psychokinetic powers who helps her friends fight off a mystery evil in their small hometown of Hawkins, Indiana, has become a TV phenomenon since it launched on Netflix in 2016.

The third season broke the streaming service’s records for views when it was released in July, and the cast are now getting ready to film season four.

It was named drama show of the year and overall show of the year at the People’s Choice Awards in LA, and has also garnered numerous Emmy, Grammys, Critics’ Choice, Golden Globe and Screen Actors Guild nominations and wins since its launch.

As well as their ’80s research, the child stars of the show also have to keep up with their schoolwork.

“I do school on set and then when I come home I go back to school and kind of balance it out,” Schnapp said. “One day I’ll be 18 and then I won’t have to do it.”

Season three of the series, also starring Winona Ryder and David Harbour, ended on a huge cliffhanger – did Harbour’s character, Hawkins’ chief of police Hopper, survive?

Schnapp says he isn’t told anything about what is in store.

“They don’t tell me anything because I’m always spoiling stuff,” he said.

There is no confirmation on when series four will be released yet – so fans will have to wait and see what’s to come from the Upside Down.
