UEFA open proceedings against Chelsea after alleged racist chanting during Europa League match

Written by on 15/01/2019

UEFA has opened disciplinary proceedings against Chelsea after the alleged racist behaviour of their fans during their Europa League match against MOL Vidi in Hungary in December.

UEFA announced the news on Tuesday morning, based on “the report submitted by the UEFA Ethics and Disciplinary Inspector commissioned to conduct an investigation”.

During the game against Vidi, which was played at the Groupama Arena in Budapest, it was alleged a number of Chelsea fans sang a derogatory song about Tottenham featuring anti-Semitic language.

Chairman Bruce Buck condemned the actions of “a few mindless individuals at some of our recent matches” and added Chelsea “will not rest until we have eliminated all forms of discrimination from the club”.

Lacking enough evidence from officials at the game, UEFA appointed a disciplinary inspector to investigate the incident.

UEFA says “disciplinary proceedings have been instigated” and a charge of “racist behaviour” will be judged on February 28.

Chelsea next plays Europa League games on February 14 and 21 against Malmo.
