Sergio Aguero in altercation as Manchester City lose to Wigan

Written by on 20/02/2018

Wigan’s stunning FA Cup win over Premier League leaders Manchester City was marred by ugly scenes at the final whistle involving fans from both clubs.

Objects, including an advertising board, were thrown at police from the end housing the away fans at full-time in Wigan’s 1-0 win at the DW Stadium.

Meanwhile, a pitch invasion was taking place, and one of the home supporters appeared to clash with City forward Sergio Aguero as he attempted to leave the field.

This all followed an earlier spat, sparked by an incident in first-half injury-time when City’s Fabian Delph made a rash challenge on Wigan’s Max Power, prompting referee Anthony Taylor to pull a yellow card out of his pocket before changing his mind and producing red.

That infuriated City players, who surrounded the referee, and the dispute spilled into the rival technical areas, with Aguero having to be dragged away by City boss Pep Guardiola as he argued furiously with Wigan coaches.

Television cameras in the tunnel then captured footage of Guardiola and Wigan manager Paul Cook being kept apart by staff as they confronted each other.

After the match, Cook was critical of the Wigan fan who appeared to get involved in an altercation with Aguero.

“It’s not right is it?” said Cook. “It’s incorrect.

“But I’ve not seen the incidents, so I’d rather not comment. With all due respect, players’ safety is paramount for everyone.”

On the trouble after the final whistle, Guardiola said: “I was in the locker room, I didn’t see it. It’s safer when
the fans are not there, but sometimes it happens.

“The fans respect the players and the players the fans and go inside.”

When quizzed about his confrontation with Cook, Guardiola added: “Stay in his position, that’s all [I said to the Wigan manager].

“If you want to ask me about football, do so. Nothing happened in the tunnel, nothing happened with my colleague. It was just stay in your position, that’s all, and that’s finished.”

An FA investigation into the night’s events may now be in the offing, with the governing body likely to review footage, read referee Anthony Taylor’s report, and contact the two clubs involved, before deciding whether to issue charges.
