Written by on 26/01/2020

Mark Wood claimed a second Test five-for as England bowled South Africa out for 183 in their first innings, before the tourists stretched their lead to 303 by tea on day three of the fourth Test in Johannesburg.

Wood (5-46) took three of the final four South African wickets to fall in the morning, though England were frustrated for much of the morning session as Quinton de Kock (76) struck a fine fifty and put on 79 for the eighth wicket with Dwaine Pretorius (37).

England opted not to enforce the follow-ow and Zak Crawley (24) and Dom Sibley (39no) shared in another impressive opening partnership, though the former and Joe Denly (8) fell as England pushed on in their second innings.

Earlier, Chris Woakes (2-38) struck four balls into the day, Vernon Philander (4) serving up a leading edge to Stuart Broad at mid-off. But, far from triggering another collapse from the Proteas tail, De Kock and Pretorius cashed in as the pitch appeared to flatten out.

Ben Stokes (2-47) broke the partnership – Pretorius steering an edge to gully, where Crawley took a fine catch – before Wood blasted out the final two South African batsmen on the stroke of lunch.

Wood first broke De Kock’s resistance, clean-bowling him with a blistering 90mph delivery that broke the bail, and then got No 11 Dane Paterson (4) nicking off to secure his second five-wicket haul in Tests.

In the afternoon session, Crawley and Sibley put on 56 for the opening wicket before Crawley nicked a beauty from Pretorius (1-23) behind.

Denly added only eight to England’s score before being cleaned up by the impressive Paterson (1-6), bowled through the gate shortly before the tea interval.

South Africa’s plight has been made all the worse by Philander pulling up with seemingly a hamstring injury nine balls into his opening spell. The veteran seamer, appearing in his final Test match, has also been fined 15 per cent of his match fee and handed one demerit point for his send-off to Jos Buttler on day two of the Test.
