Srisaket Sor Rungvisai produced a sensational fourth round stoppage of Roman Gonzalez to retain his WBC super-flyweight world title.
After a thrilling encounter back in March which controversially went the way of the Thai on the scorecards, the two super-flyweight’s once again went toe-to-toe, albeit for a shorter period of time, in another eventful and explosive world title scrap.
‘Chocolatito’ and Sor Rungvisai, 30, traded leather for leather before the champion found a huge right hand that left the Nicaraguan great, who had been down earlier on in the round, sadly sprawled motionless on the canvas leaving those in the Stubhub Center shocked and speechless.
It was Sor Rungvisai who, intent on showing that his first victory was no fluke, started the fight the better and quickly went on the front-foot, firing home with aggression as Gonzalez appeared sloppy with his punches.
After the second round again went the way of the busier Thai, who was regularly getting the better of the close exchanges, Gonzalez found his form in the third in an emphatic round of action.
‘Chocolatito’, a four-weight world champion, landed a succession of straight punches that rocked Sor Rungvisai to suggest that he may be about to take over the contest.
That suggestion could not have been further from the truth however when, with the fight in its fourth stanza, the Thai landed a huge right hand to the head that sent Gonzalez to the canvas.
The Nicaraguan managed to get back to his feet but his legs were visibly shaken and with two minutes to go in the round, Sor Rungvisai savagely went on the hunt.
The end came as a thunderous and devastating right hook landed flush and knocked Gonzalez out cold, leaving him laid flat out on the canvas, making for uneasy and sad viewing.
Speaking after successfully retaining his title, Sor Rungvisai said: "I trained really hard for four months ahead of this fight and it paid off.
"I fought for Thailand and the pride of my country, I dedicate this win to my home country.
"For the first fight, I only trained for two months, I knew this time I would knock him out.
"I will fight whoever next, I’m not scared of anyone out there."
