The director of the new Sonic the Hedgehog film has promised fans he will make changes to the hedgehog’s design after an online backlash.

A trailer released on Tuesday revealed that the famous blue hedgehog had undergone an overhaul, prompting many fans to question why it has been seemingly given human teeth and disproportionate legs.

Responding to the criticism of the design, director Jeff Fowler said he had listened to feedback and is ready to make changes.

He tweeted: “Thank you for the support. And the criticism. The message is loud and clear… you aren’t happy with the design & you want changes.

“It’s going to happen. Everyone at Paramount & Sega are fully committed to making this character the BEST he can be… #sonicmovie #gottafixfast.”

Sonic’s original designer, Naoto Ohshima, said he was concerned with the film revamp.

He tweeted: “I was hoping that adults could enjoy it. So far, various Sonics have appeared.

“I loved all Sonics. I saw a trailer of Sonic’s movie.

“I was expecting adults to have fun too. I am worried.”

Sonic made its debut as a 16-bit character on the Sega Genesis in 1991, but has received a number of updates throughout its lifetime.

The character is famed for running extremely quickly through various levels in an attempt to defeat nemesis Dr Robotnik.

The film, which will be released in November, stars Jim Carrey as Dr Robotnik and Ben Schwartz as Sonic.

Schwartz is best known for his role as Jean-Ralphio in Parks and Recreation.
