Sir Mo Farah wins on UK track farewell at Birmingham Diamond League meeting

Written by on 21/08/2017

Sir Mo Farah signed off from British track racing with victory in the 3000m at the Birmingham Diamond League meeting.

Farah won at a canter in his penultimate race before turning to the road, and the 34-year-old now goes to Zurich on Wednesday to bring down the curtain on a track career which yielded four Olympic gold medals and a further six in the World Championships.

The last of those came in the 10,000m this month, and the Birmingham meeting represented a chance to leave his home country on winning terms after he was runner-up in the 5000m in London.

Victory never looked in doubt, Farah reaching for his familiar ‘Mobot’ pose as he crossed the line before draping himself in a Union Flag.

"It’s been an amazing week," he said. "I have been tired but had a little downtime with family. Emotion was high, not as high as London but it was the last time at home.

"While I was racing I was just trying to think about the race and who was there.

"It means everything to me to be four times Olympic champion. All I dreamt of as a youngster was running for Britain.

"A hobby has become a job which is what you want. Going to the road will be a new game and a new mindset, I am excited."
