Royal baby: Prince Harry cancels Amsterdam trip amid due date rumours

Written by on 03/05/2019

The Duke of Sussex has postponed his trip to Amsterdam, where he was due next week, as furious speculation around his baby’s due date mounts.

The trip was only announced on Wednesday but now Buckingham Palace has said they’re going to rearrange the visit, and not just because of the baby but because of a clash with other visits by members of the Royal family next week.

The palace has said that, “Due to the logistical planning for the travelling press to cover visits and engagements by The Royal Family, we have taken the decision to postpone The Duke of Sussex’s scheduled visit to Amsterdam ‪on Wednesday 8th May 2019.”

But they added “The Duke is currently scheduled to travel to The Hague ‪on Thursday 9th May for the launch of the Invictus Games The Hague 2020 as planned.”

Next week the Prince of Wales and the Duchess of Cornwall are due to carry out an important diplomatic trip to Germany on behalf of the foreign office. The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge are also visiting North Wales on Wednesday.

The palace often talk about “deconflicting” diaries to make sure that as few Royal events as possible clash.

The decision to postpone Harry’s visit on Wednesday, is an acknowledgement that media organisations would find it difficult to cover all the events but most would decide to follow the dad-to-be.

It was previously hinted that the final decision on whether he should go to Amsterdam and The Hague would rest on whether Meghan has given birth and when.

The 9 May has been in the Duke’s diary ever since it was announced that the Netherlands would be hosting the next Invictus Games, the Paralympic style sports event that he founded for wounded, sick and injured military personnel.

And it’s understood he very much wants to be part of the launch event marking one year until the games.

The royal baby’s exact due date has not been disclosed, but Meghan did let slip that their first child would be arriving late April or early May.

The couple have said they plan to keep the birth as private as possible, but it is anticipated the palace will announce when Meghan has gone into labour.

Buckingham Palace also announced on Friday that the Queen plans to attend Lady Gabriella Windsor’s wedding on Saturday 18 May.

Lady Gabriella, who is the daughter of Prince and Princess Michael of Kent, will marry Thomas Kingston in St George’s Chapel, Windsor Castle, where the Duke and Duchess of Sussex wed last year.
