Rosie Johnson: Body found on Isle of Wight by police searching for politician’s niece

Written by on 29/06/2019

Police searching for the niece of a Scottish politician after she went missing have found a body.

Rosie Johnson was last seen on Sunday at the PGL’s Little Canada Activity Centre in Wootton on the Isle of Wight, where she worked as an instructor.

Hampshire Police confirmed officers looking for the 22-year-old from Glasgow found a body in Wootton on Friday afternoon.

The death is not being treated as suspicious and although formal identification is yet to take place, Ms Johnson’s next of kin have been made aware of the discovery, the force added.

A file is now being prepared for the coroner.

Daniel Johnson, Scottish Labour MSP for Edinburgh Southern, had appealed for information on his missing niece earlier this week.

“My niece, Rosie is missing,” he wrote on Twitter on Wednesday.

“Could anyone with information please contact the Isle of Wight Police.”

Mr Johnson later thanked “everyone for their support and kind wishes” and urged people to respect his family’s privacy as they concentrated on the search.

Police launched a multi-agency search for Ms Johnson, including Wight Search and Rescue volunteers, the coastguard and the National Police Air Service.

Residents in the Wootton area on the island were also asked to help find her by checking sheds, boats and outbuildings.

Inspector Andy MacDonald said at the time: “We have serious concerns for Rosie’s welfare.”

A PGL spokeswoman said Ms Johnson had not reported for work as planned on Monday morning and it was “providing any support we can to help”.
