Six-part series COBRA centres around the government’s emergency committee as it fights to keep citizens safe in the eye of a political storm, giving an insight into the goings on at Whitehall during a time of crisis.

Carlyle will play PM Robert Sutherland, a politician who has to contend with “impossible political decisions”.

Speaking about the role, Carlyle said: “I am really looking forward to stepping into the role of the prime minister in a story that feels almost too true to be fiction.

“COBRA is a palpably thrilling and witty take on a political drama but with a humanity at the heart of the series.”

Victoria Hamilton (The Crown) will play Sutherland’s chief of staff Anna Marshall in the Sky original production.

Additional cast members include Richard Dormer (Game of Thrones), David Haig (Killing Eve), Marsha Thomason (White Collar) and Lucy Cohu (Broadchurch).

The series has been written by Ben Richards (The Tunnel Sabotage; Strike: The Cuckoo’s Calling) and produced by New Pictures (The Missing; Catherine The Great).

:: COBRA will air on Sky One and TV streaming service NOW TV in the autumn
