Records fall again as Britons bask in scorching bank holiday heat

Written by on 26/08/2019

A record temperature has been set for the August Bank Holiday Monday, as the mercury has hit 28.6C (83.5F) at Tibenham Airfield in Norfolk.

The previous heat record for the August Bank Holiday Monday was the 28.2C (82.8F) recorded in Holbeach, Lincolnshire, in 2017.

“Temperatures will continue to climb through the rest of today,” the Met Office warned in a tweet.

It comes a day after the August bank holiday weekend record for highest temperature in the UK was broken when the heat soared to 33.3C (91.9F) at Heathrow Airport.

Thousands of people endured the baking temperatures at a sold-out Headingley in Leeds on Sunday to watch The Ashes, while hundreds of thousands danced in the sun in west London during what is thought to be the hottest Notting Hill Carnival to date.

Speaking before confirmation of Monday’s record-breaking temperatures, Met Office meteorologist Craig Snell said: “All in all, if you like the sunshine and the hot weather, then it is going to be a good day.”

The previous record temperature for the August bank holiday stood at 31.5C (88.7F) at Heathrow in 2001.

This bank holiday’s record-breaking heat – caused by warm air being dragged up over the UK from France – follows a relatively wet and cold month so far.

The Met Office said the hot air would “hang on” across the South East until midweek before “fresher air” spreads to all parts of the UK with a “noticeable drop” in temperatures by Thursday.
