Premier League title races that went to the last day

With the 2018/19 Premier League title race going down to the wire, we take a look back at the other title tussles which also went to the final day.
1994/95 – Blackburn Rovers
Blackburn and Manchester United were locked in an epic battle with Kenny Dalglish’s Rovers side pursuing the club’s first top-flight title in 81 years.
On the last day, Blackburn lost 2-1 to Liverpool at Anfield, but they held on to their slender advantage as United drew 1-1 at West Ham.
1995/96 – Man Utd
The 95/96 Premier League season saw Newcastle blow a 12-point lead at the top. Going into the last day, Manchester United lifted the trophy by beating Middlesbrough 3-0 at Riverside.
In the end, the gap was four points as Kevin Keegan’s Newcastle were held to a 1-1 draw at home by Tottenham.
1998/99 – Man Utd
In what turned out to be the first of Manchester United’s trophies in their treble-winning season, the title race was fought between them and Arsenal.
Arsenal were hoping rivals Tottenham could do them a favour by taking points off Manchester United at Old Trafford as they beat Aston Villa at Highbury.
Spurs took the lead through Les Ferdinand, but goals from David Beckham and Andy Cole secured Sir Alex Ferguson’s side the title for a second consecutive season by just one point.
2007/08 – Man Utd
Manchester United and Chelsea were neck-and-neck heading into the final day, although United’s far superior goal difference put them in a strong position.
United beat Wigan thanks to goals from Cristiano Ronaldo and Ryan Giggs. Chelsea, meanwhile, drew with Bolton at Stamford Bridge.
Ten days later, United beat Chelsea again in the Champions League final.
2009/10 – Chelsea
Chelsea went into the final day just one point ahead of United and needed to beat Wigan at home to make sure of the title.
An 8-0 win at Stamford Bridge meant Carlo Ancelotti lifted the Premier League trophy in his debut season. United beat Stoke but, ultimately, it was not enough.
2011/12 – Man City
In what was one of the most dramatic conclusions to a Premier League season, it looked as though United had won the league after beating Sunderland with City 2-1 down against QPR heading into injury time.
But last-gasp goals from Edin Dzeko and Sergio Aguero wrapped up the title for City on goal difference.
2013/14 – Man City
Steven Gerrard’s infamous slip a few weeks prior to the final day saw City take the initiative heading into the last match – two points ahead of Brendan Rodgers’ Liverpool.
However, the two teams maintained their positions with City comfortably beating West Ham which made Liverpool’s win over Newcastle redundant.
