Potential new Banksy artwork in Bristol may be a nod to Valentine’s Day

Written by on 14/02/2020

An artwork thought to be by Banksy has appeared on the side of a man’s house on his birthday.

In a possible nod to Valentine’s Day, it features a girl firing a slingshot of red roses and plastic flowers on the property in Bristol – the hometown of the elusive artist.

An image of the work has now appeared on the artist’s Instagram feed – usually seen as an authentication.

Kelly Woodruff, 37, who helps manage the rented home in Marsh Lane, Barton Hill, says the artwork appeared on the 67th birthday of her father, Edwin Simons, who owns the family rental business.

She said: “We’ve been down here all day and it’s just been a complete buzz of excitement.

“There’s so many people coming and enjoying it, taking pictures, it’s fantastic.

“There’s been a lot of debate about whether it’s a Banksy or not. Most people I’ve spoken to think it 100% is, and they’re naming it the Valentine’s Banksy.

“It’s incredible and beautiful.”

Ms Woodruff says she was first alerted to it on Thursday morning when a friend tagged her in a Facebook post showing the artwork and asking: “Isn’t that one of your rental properties?”.

She also said the family were looking to get glass to cover and preserve it, but said Bristol City Council was unable to offer any help.

She added: “My slight worry is, we’ve got this Storm Dennis coming on the weekend, so I really want to try and protect the roses.”

One local resident, James Bullock, tweeted that he had seen the piece early on Thursday morning.

He said: “Me and my girlfriend were heading that way to the gym this morning about 6.20am and there were people with scaffolding up.

“Thought it was odd and then we walked past it again this morning!!”.
