Police appeal after man punched in head and told ‘gays should be strung up’

Written by on 28/07/2019

Police are appealing for information following a homophobic attack on two men in London which saw one of them being punched repeatedly in the head and told “gays should be strung up”.

British Transport Police (BTP) says that shortly after midnight on 14 April, a man was travelling with his partner when a group of men began making homophobic remarks.

The victim went to leave the Essex-bound train at Upminster Station when he was physically attacked, causing him to fall to the platform.

He was left unconscious for a number of minutes, police said.

The assault happened on board the 11.39pm service from London Liverpool Street to Shoeburyness.

Officers believe the men captured on CCTV images may have information which could help them investigate.

BTP said: “No one should ever be targeted with abuse or violence because of who they are, or who they love. We take all reports of hate crime seriously and will work hard to identify perpetrators and bring them before the courts.”

:: If you recognise the men in the images, contact BTP by sending a text to 61016 or by calling 0800 40 50 40 quoting reference 58 of 14/04/2019. Or you can ring Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 55 111.
