PC feared for her life facing ‘demonic’ killer Matthew Williams, inquest hears

Written by on 18/03/2017

A police officer thought she was going to die as she confronted a "demonic" ex-convict who killed a woman and was seen "eating" her, an inquest has heard.

Matthew Williams fatally attacked Cerys Yemm, 22, with a screwdriver in his room at the Sirhowy Arms Hotel in Argoed, Blackwood, South Wales, in November 2014 – just a fortnight after he was released from prison.

Hotel landlady Mandy Miles opened the door to the room during the attack, before quickly closing it and calling police to say Williams had "put a screwdriver" through Miss Yemm’s face and was "eating" her.

Gwent Coroner’s Court in Newport heard Williams, 34, was dripping in blood as PCs Kelda Griffiths, Alan Cottrell and Stephen New burst in to the room later.

PC Griffiths told the inquest: "I remembering entering this room thinking ‘Love you Mum and Dad’ and didn’t know whether I would survive this incident.

"If I’m honest he didn’t seem human and when I heard the growling and shouting… it was demonic.

"It is like something you see on the TV and don’t expect to see in life or reality."

PC Griffiths said Miss Yemm’s face was "horrific", before describing how she and other officers tried to restrain Williams.

She said: "I saw a barb of a Taser had hit the bridge of Matthew Williams’s nose, which PC Cottrell fired.

"He was fighting and he was struggling. At the time of putting the straps on I could hear PC Cottrell saying ‘Calm down Matthew, I’ll have to Taser you again’.

"I didn’t want to take my eyes off him. I was very concerned after what I had just seen he would bite me."

Earlier in the inquest, jurors were told Williams was Tasered three times before he became "floppy" and seemed to go unconscious.

Less than an hour after police first arrived on the scene Williams was dead.

The 34-year-old suffered from paranoid schizophrenia and had 78 previous convictions for offences including assault, burglary and drug-related offences.

He met Miss Yemm on a night out after his release from HMP Parc in Bridgend and the pair spent time together, forming a "flirty" relationship.
