Paul Pogba forced off injured 18 minutes into Man Utd clash with Basel

Written by on 13/09/2017

Paul Pogba’s first game as Manchester United captain lasted just 18 minutes as he was forced off injured in Tuesday’s Champions League opener against Basel.

Manchester United manager Jose Mourinho said he did not know how serious Pogba’s injury was after the game, but the France international was seen leaving Old Trafford on crutches later on Tuesday.

"I don’t know obviously, but by experience, just by looking and feeling, it’s a hamstring," Mourinho said. "Big, small, I don’t know."

With Michael Carrick and Antonio Valencia on the bench, Pogba inherited the captain’s armband at Old Trafford, but he had to limp off after abruptly pulling up and clutching the back of his left leg.

Marouane Fellaini, fit again after a calf injury, came on in Pogba’s place and the France midfielder showed his frustration by tossing the armband aside as he hobbled down the touchline towards the tunnel.

The score was 0-0 at the time in the Group A fixture before the Belgian substitute opened the scoring in the 35th minute for the home side, with Romelu Lukaku and substitute Marcus Rashford completing a 3-0 win.

Pogba has enjoyed a fine start to the season, scoring twice in United’s opening two Premier League games.

Jose Mourinho’s side are top of the Premier League table, level on points with rivals Manchester City, after their winning start was halted by a 2-2 draw at Stoke.
