Patriots 35-14 Titans: New England Patriots dominate in win

Written by on 14/01/2018

Tom Brady threw for 337 yards and three touchdowns as the New England Patriots dominated the Tennessee Titans in all phases of the game, romping to a 35-14 win in Foxborough.

In the early stages of the contest, it looked as though New England were suffering with some jitters, and Marcus Mariota took advantage by advancing his team 95 yards in 11 plays to take a 7-0 lead in the first quarter. A fantastic drive was capped with a stunning one-handed touchdown grab by rookie Corey Davis – his first touchdown in the NFL.

But by scoring, the Titans only woke a sleeping giant. New England scored on the next possession, and the one after that, and the one after that. First, Dion Lewis busted big plays in the screen game and on the ground before James White took over at the goal line and grabbed a Tom Brady shovel pass for five-yard scamper.

White added his second touchdown soon after, this time on the ground, to give New England a 14-7 lead. The third scoring drive in the same quarter was long, and just as efficient. The offense drove 91 yards in 16 plays, and the only thing that could stop them was the end of the field. Brady found Chris Hogan from four yards out to cap off a clinical offensive quarter.

The Titans were lucky not to be down 24-7 at the half as Stephen Gostkowski missed a 53-yard field goal as time expired, but unlike last week, there were no miracle comebacks on the cards in the second. While Tennessee were finally able to force a Patriots punt to start the third, they simply didn’t have the quality to hang with Brady’s bunch.

New England’s defense, outside of the early touchdown drive, was dominant. They put Mariota under constant pressure, and held last week’s star Derrick Henry to 28 yards on 12 carries. On offense, Brandon Bolden strolled in from two yards out to make it 28-7 before the end of the third quarter, and they weren’t finished there. Brady capped off his scoring with a four-yard strike to Rob Gronkowski early in the fourth quarter.

Davis added a second score for Tennessee late in the game, but it was nothing more than a consolation and an early glimpse of a young player who could be a future star.

There were some incredible performances all over the field as New England racked up 438 yards of offense. Brady completed 35 of his 53 attempts for 337 yards and three TDs. Dion Lewis totalled 141 yards, while Danny Amendola had a whopping 11 grabs for 112 yards. The Patriots have once again shown themselves as the favourites to win it all this season.

As usual, the team responded to ‘outside drama’ by proving their excellence on the field. It was another statement win for the Patriots, and they will host either the Pittsburgh Steelers or Jacksonville Jaguars in their seventh straight appearance in the the AFC Championship game next weekend.
