Patrick Smith: Edinburgh student dies after falling from window at house party

Written by on 12/09/2019

A university student has died after plunging from a third-floor flat window in Edinburgh.

Patrick Smith, from Ayrshire, fell from the window during a house party in the early hours of Sunday.

Officers rushed to the address in the city’s Marchmont area but the 21-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene, Police Scotland said.

They added his death was being treated as unexplained but not suspicious.

A spokesperson for Police Scotland said the 21-year-old was pronounced dead at the scene.

The University of Edinburgh has paid tribute to Mr Smith, a keen swimmer who was about to begin a masters in chemical engineering.

Professor Lev Sarkisov, director of chemical engineering at the university, said: “Patrick was a fantastic student. After four years as an undergraduate he was about to begin his masters in chemical engineering.

“He was also clearly the heart and soul of the student chemical engineering society – many students from other years, not only his own cohort, knew him very well, this is why the impact of his tragic death is so wide.”

His friends also paid tribute to him on social media, with Kayleigh Haggo writing on Facebook: “Patzo. I can’t believe you have been taken from us, life is so unfair.

“You were the kindest, most loving person that anyone could ever meet. There was never ever ever a dull moment when you were around.

“I’m so lucky to have so many memories that I will treasure forever. Thank you so much for everything. Rest in peace angel.”

His friend Jay wrote on Twitter: “This week I lost my gorgeous best friend, Patrick always wanted the best for me (don’t worry I’ll quit smoking).

“He was genuinely the most brave and fearless boy I know, and I think many people feel the same.

“I am so honoured to have known you as you were a ray of light and life of the party.

“You introduced me to a community that has helped me grow so much, pushed me outside of my comfort zone and gave me so much confidence, so I am entirely grateful.

“We bickered like cat and dog but you know I love you endlessly.”

A memorial will be held at Ayr Racecourse on 18 September to celebrate Mr Smith’s life, and those who wish to attend have been asked to wear “Patrick’s love of colours”.
