Olivia Breen breaks record to take gold for Wales at Commonwealth Games

Written by on 09/04/2018

World para-champion Olivia Breen broke the Commonwealth Games record to take gold in the women’s long jump.

Breen repeated her London 2017 victory over Australia’s Erin Cleaver in the T38 category.

Her effort of 4.86m was also a personal best and came despite three no-jumps at the start of the competition.

She beat Cleaver to gold at the World Para-athletics Championships in London by 20cm.

Victory this time was more conclusive with a winning margin of half a metre.

Breen’s gold was Wales’ third of the 2018 Games following weightlifter Gareth Evans and cyclist Elinor Barker.

Wales also picked up a silver medal on day four with Laura Daniels in the women’s bowls singles.

There were also bronze medals for Bethan Davies in the 20km walk and Laura Hughes in the 75kg weightlifting.

Breen was diagnosed with cerebral palsy aged two after contracting a meningitis-type illness at birth.

Her preparation for the games was hampered by a hamstring tear at the end of last year.
