Old Vic apologises after Spacey investigation reveals 20 allegations

Written by on 16/11/2017

The Old Vic has apologised after an investigation into its former artistic director Kevin Spacey found 20 allegations against him.

One of London’s biggest theatres released a statement on Thursday announcing a "commitment to a new way forward" after learning of "20 personal testimonies of alleged inappropriate behaviour" carried out by Spacey.

"It was claimed that those affected felt unable to raise concerns and that Kevin Spacey operated without sufficient accountability," the statement reads.

It adds that only one of the claims was reported, but staff "was unclear about how to respond".

The Old Vic says "star power", "lack of clarity" and "career insecurity" caused information gaps during Spacey’s tenure.

"This is clearly unacceptable and The Old Vic truly apologises for not creating an environment or culture where people felt able to speak freely."

Spacey, who was artistic director at the Old Vic between 2004 and 2015, has been mired in allegations of sexual misconduct since actor Anthony Rapp accused him of sexual assault when Rapp was only 14.

Spacey has apologised but claims he does "not remember the encounter". Since then, other allegations have surfaced and the Oscar-winning star said he is seeking "evaluation and treatment".

The Old Vic said that, although "no correspondents alleged they were minors", it is appointing "guardians" to ensure everyone working at the Old Vic can have appropriate support.

These appointed members will "spend time with those who work here to create an ‘OK – Not OK set of cultural expectations for all to understand and own".

"To all those people who felt unable to speak up at the time, The Old Vic truly apologises," said chairman Nick Clarry.

"Inappropriate behaviour by anyone working at The Old Vic is completely unacceptable," he added.

"We will foster a safe and supportive environment without prejudice, harassment or bullying of any sort, at any level. We want anyone who works here to feel confident, valued and proud to be part of The Old Vic family."

The current artistic director of the company, Matthew Warchus, has shared "genuine and deep sympathy for all those who have come forward".

"These allegations have been a shock and a disturbing surprise to many of us. It is incorrect, unfair and irresponsible to say that everybody knew," he added, saying the theatre is now "committed to a new way forward".

The Old Vic’s statement comes after Netflix and Sony Pictures have cut ties with Spacey, cancelling his show House Of Cards and replacing him in an upcoming film.
