Ninety-year-old sailor missing as empty dinghy found off Wales

Written by on 17/04/2017

The search for a 90-year-old sailor whose empty dinghy was found off the coast of Wales has been called off.

Dyfed-Powys Police said Arthur Taylor, known as Archie, was last seen at 9.30am on Saturday.

Mr Taylor, who is slim with grey hair, took his dinghy out from the boat club in Gwbert, in the county of Ceredigion.

He is 5ft 4ins tall and was wearing a dark grey waterproof jacket over a navy jumper.

After the Milford Haven Coastguard and RNLI were told he had not returned, an air and sea search was launched.

But on Sunday night, the Coastguard said it was unlikely a "formal" operation would begin again on Monday.

Police said they were looking for "any video or photographs taken by members of the public of the coastal area around the sea off Gwbert yesterday morning as they may have captured him (Mr Taylor) sailing".

The coastguard was contacted at 5.15pm on Saturday about Mr Taylor, who failed to return home after a trip on the water during the day.

His small boat was found near to the town of Cardigan without anyone on board.

The coastguard rescue helicopter from Caernarfon went to the scene, as well as rescue teams from Caernarfon, Cardigan, Gwbert and Moylegrove.

RNLI lifeboats from Cardigan and Fishguard also attended, as did Dyfed-Powys Police.

Anyone who has seen Mr Taylor or has information is asked to call police on 101, quoting incident reference 251 of 15 April.
