New, old skills – heritage skills workshops

Lancaster City Council is holding a further series of free workshops this spring for people to improve heritage related skills including stone carving, stained glass and lime plastering, thanks to National Lottery players.
The Lancaster district has more than 1,300 listed buildings, 38 conservation areas and 38 scheduled monuments. Looking after such historic structures requires a particular set of construction skills and traditional craftsmanship.
The city council, through the Morecambe THI2: A View for Eric project, is offering free introductory-level hands-on training to help people gain a practical understanding of some of these traditional skills and methods.
• Stone relief carving, Wednesday March 7 from 10am to 4.30pm.
• Stained glass, Friday March 9 from 8.30am to 5.30pm
• Incised stone lettering and carving, Wednesday April 11 from 10am to 4.30pm
• Lime plastering and pointing, Friday April 27 from 9.30am to 4pm
It is anticipated that further workshops will be added in the coming weeks.
Morecambe THI2: A View for Eric, funded by the National Lottery through a Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) grant in conjunction with Lancaster City Council, seeks to improve the western end of the Morecambe Conservation Area through investment in its built heritage and public realm.
Supporting this is a series of opportunities for the local community to learn more about their heritage and how to look after it.
The workshops are suitable for people already working in, or associated with, the construction industry and wanting to expand their knowledge or for individuals with no experience who are interested in heritage skills and crafts.

The stone carving, lettering and lime plastering workshops will take place at Lancaster and Morecambe College. Lunch and refreshments will be provided.
The stained glass workshop will take place in Padiham and includes return coach travel from Morecambe.
