New Cabinet appointment made after portfolio holder steps down

Written by on 09/01/2019

Councillor Chris Hogg has resigned from his position as portfolio holder for culture and leisure on the South Lakeland District Council (SLDC) Cabinet.

In his resignation letter to council leader, Councillor Giles Archibald, Cllr Hogg, who represents Kendal South and Natland, said: “Whilst it has been a pleasure to serve as a Cabinet member (particularly in the culture and leisure role), for personal reasons I feel I would be better suited to a backbench role for the foreseeable future.

“I am still fully supportive of what you and Cabinet are driving to achieve for the residents of South Lakeland and look forward to continuing to represent the people of Kendal South for the remainder of my term at SLDC.”

Councillor Robin Ashcroft, who represents the Grange ward, is the new portfolio holder.

He said: “I am delighted and honoured to be taking on the role of portfolio holder for culture and leisure. Obviously, I have big boots to fill because Chris has done such a great job but I am looking forward to engaging with some very interesting projects, as well as promoting and supporting the great culture and leisure opportunities in our area.”

Cllr Archibald said: “I am extremely grateful for Cllr Hogg’s terrific contribution as portfolio holder for Culture and Leisure on SLDC. The cultural scene has benefited hugely from his work and he leaves behind a legacy of success, for example, the successful Great Place grant and backing the Lake District World Heritage Site process, and making great strides forward in supporting South Lakeland’s development as a place for nationally and internationally recognised arts, events and festivals.

“He will be missed, but we fully understand that personal reasons are causing him to stand down from Cabinet. We all look forward to working with him in Council.”

He added: “I congratulate Cllr Ashcroft on his appointment and I am looking forward to working with him on the SLDC cabinet. He has all the attributes necessary to make a long-lasting contribution to our work serving the people of South Lakeland and I am confident he will be a great success in the role.”
