New Banksy murals appear in tunnel near Barbican Centre in London

Written by on 18/09/2017

Two murals by street artist Banksy have appeared in a tunnel close to the Barbican Centre in London.

The works mark the opening of an exhibition by American artist Jean-Michel Basquiat, who began his career as a graffiti artist in New York before becoming a painter.

He died in 1988 at the age of 27 from a suspected drug overdose.

On Instagram, Banksy described his murals as an "(unofficial) collaboration" with the new show.

He described the Barbican as a "place that is normally very keen to clean any graffiti from its walls".

The Basquiat exhibition – Boom for Real – opens at the centre on Wednesday and runs until 28 January.

The Barbican described it as the "first large-scale exhibition in the UK" of Basquiat’s work.
