National Park Partnership seeks dynamic leader who loves the Lakes

Written by on 03/02/2023

The Lake District National Park Partnership is looking for a senior leader who really loves the Lake District to come forward as a new Chair before Valentine’s Day.

The Lake District National Park Partnership is a unique model of collaborative working involving 25 leading organisations from the public, private, community and voluntary sectors with a key role to play in shaping the future of the Lake District.

The Partnership is seeking a new Chair to provide strong leadership to look after the National Park’s internationally-recognised living and working landscape as it moves into a period of both significant challenge and opportunity.

This is an exciting and rewarding role, as the new Chair is joining at a pivotal point in the early phases of delivery of the new Partnership Plan for the National Park. They will joint for an initial three-year term with potential to extend for a further three years on a part time basis of around two to four days a month.

Stephen Henwood is the outgoing Partnership Chair, who has been in the role since 2018.

He says: “I have thoroughly enjoyed my time as Chair of the Lake District National Park Partnership and am immensely proud of what the Partnership has achieved so far.

“The contribution of the Partnership, working with others through challenging circumstances to manage the consequences of the Covid pandemic for our communities and businesses, has been particularly important over the last couple of years.

“We have achieved a great deal, but there is plenty more to do. This is an exciting opportunity to take over the helm to deliver on an ambitious plan to deliver on our five key areas.”

These five key areas are:

  • Vibrant communities and a prosperous economy
  • Climate action – achieving net zero and adapting to climate change
  • The future of farming and forestry, nature recovery and climate change
  • A Lake District for everyone
  • Sustainable travel and transport

Stephen Henwood joined the Partnership with considerable board and senior executive experience, encompassing financial and general management roles in both the private and public sector and complementary experience in charitable and not-for-profit activities.

Stephen was Chair of the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority 2008-2017, responsible for decommissioning the UK’s first generation civil nuclear facilities and Chair of the Board of the University of Cumbria 2010-2014, helping to guide them through challenging times.
